Podcast Movement Evolutions

February 8, 2023 – Last year (2022), was an interesting year in the podcast world. Some companies took a step back, while others took a giant leap forward.

Many podcasts that were started during the pandemic have gone dormant, while other exciting shows have emerged.

Podcast Movement Evolutions is coming to Las Vegas next month and like the show in Dallas last August, it looks to be one filled with lots of great sessions and a chance for new and existing vendors to show off how they are contributing to the ecosystem.

If you plan to attend, please reach out so we can grab a cup of coffee!

And good luck on the tables… we’re in Vegas after all!

Work From Home

July 28,2022 – As stated in this article, Work From Home is not going away. But the industry will need to figure out ways to adapt, especially when it comes to cybersecurity. It’s an issue not discussed enough and has already had major effects on some of the largest broadcasters. Randsomware from rouge groups can cause tens of thousands, sometimes millions of dollars in damage and lost revenue. While some might not want to spend the money on prevention, it’ll be way less than the losses that can occur and the cost to fix!

Yours,
George Laughlin

City of Hope 2022

July 25 – 2022 If you’ve never attended the City of Hope’s “Taste of Hope” event in NYC, you should plan to this year! It’s one of the passions of Alissa Pollack and she and her team always do an outstanding job! Everyone in the radio and music industry in New York will be there.

Alissa said about the event, “This will be an epic turnout as we’ve all missed seeing each other, and we are thrilled to be back in action this year for our annual TASTE OF HOPE EVENT. It’s a special evening where the music industry and the radio industry all congregate for delicious food, lots of wonderful wine and camaraderie to help raise many thousands of dollars for the CITY OF HOPE.
I hope you’ll join us and raise a glass.”

Podcast Movement 2022

July 14, 2022 – I’m excited to attend and see everyone at Podcast Movement, which will be in our town of Dallas, Texas this August 23-26. It’s required attendance for anyone in or around the podcast industry. Everyone from soccer moms with a small podcast to Hollywood executives attends. There are so many speaking tracks, meet-up groups and keynote speeches, that you’ll walk away having absorbed a ton of information. Plus, the convention floor will showcase some of the latest innovations and tools in the industry.

Look for the YEA booth and come say hello!
Looking forward!

Is Harry Styles’ Demonstrating the future of Concert Tours?

May 30, 2022 by George Laughlin

For those not in-the-know, Harry Styles is one of the biggest artists in pop music, having launched a successful solo career after exploding as part of the One Direction phenomenon. And while his albums have reached the top of the charts and his singles have received tons of radio airplay, streams and play on YouTube, it’s his new tour that I’d like to talk about.

This fall in the US he’s not doing the traditional 30-50 city tour. He’s visiting 4. Yes, four. New York, Chicago, Austin and LA. He’ll have 15 shows in NYC, 5 in Austin, 5 in Chicago and 15 in LA. Why does this make perfect sense?

Logistics. Concerts today are more of an experience than ever. Setting up and taking down these intricate stages take longer and have more technology than ever. You can do bigger and better things if you give yourself more than a few hour and leave it set up for days. And it’s easier to add additional dates if tickets sell out.

Popularity. Not every artist is big enough that fans will fly to see them. Harry is. Taylor Swift is. Bruno Mars is. Adele is. You’ve seen some of those doing a Vegas residency, but do you really want to bring your kids to Vegas? Or fly from the east coast to Vegas? Having regional concerts also makes it a short drive for a large portion of the country.

Negotiation. I don’t have any insider information here, but I guarantee if you rent Madison Square Garden for a month, you’ll get a deal versus a 1 or 2 night show. And the label would be smart to also work with cities to get incentives to bring these shows as it will drive tourism, hotel rooms, and sales tax revenue.

Rest. Many people think being on tour is a fun party for the artist every night. They work for 90 minutes, everyone loves them and they make a ton of money. But if you ask any artist and they will all tell you, it’s exhausting. Having to travel every day and not sleeping in your own bed is something that gets old, fast. (I’m assuming Harry has places in the NYC and LA area).

Will you see more stars doing this type of tour? Time will tell. But I’m betting this will be the case.

George Laughlin Reports YEA Podcasts Great Growth

May 9, 2022 –

“The IAB reported today that podcast advertising revenue grew 2X faster in 2021 (+72%) than the total internet ad market according to the sixth annual IAB U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue study, prepared for the IAB by PricewaterhouseCoopers. 2021 revenue for podcasting came in at $1.4 billion, according to the report.”

This is why we’re investing in podcasts. YEA Podcasts have seen great growth in the past few years as well. We’re working hard to produce quality content for listeners and deliver great results for our advertisers. George Laughlin reports.

Marconi Awards

April 27, 2020 – Radio’s most prestigious awards are back. It’s application time for the 2022 Marconi Awards. I remember when Kidd Kraddick won the award for Major Market Radio Personality of the Year in 1998. He was thrilled. And in 2005 Kidd served as the emcee of the event.

Applications are being accepted through May 31st, so you don’t have a lot of time.

George Laughlin Commented.

The winners of the 2022 Marconi Radio Awards will be announced during a dinner program October 19, 2022 at the Javits Center during NAB Radio Show New York.

Grammy Award Winners

April 4, 2022 – “Jon Batiste was up against some heavyweights in the industry in the competition for Album of the Year (Kanye West, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, Tony Bennett, Olivia Rodrigo), but managed to secure the top prize at this year’s Grammy Awards. I won’t lie, with him being a Metairie, LA native, I was rooting for him as the underdog” said George Laughlin.

George Laughlin on Wordle for Music

March 5, 2022

The world is obsessed with Wordle. But it doesn’t work very well on the radio.

So leave it to one genius to create Heardle –

The concept isn’t new. It’s essentially “Name that Tune” just updated for smartphones. But it’s still fun and very timely. Just goes to show that good ideas never really go out of style!

Here’s their description of how to play: Listen to the intro, then find the correct artist & title in the list. Skipped or incorrect attempts unlock more of the intro. Answer in as few tries as possible and share your score!
